Teacher: Natalia Whiting Bonner of Heber UT
Natalia Whiting Bonner has enjoyed piecing quilt tops for more than twenty years. She learned how to quilt on her conventional home machine. She felt good about it, but decided that if she really wanted to take her quilting to the next level, she needed to invest in a longarm machine. In 2007, when she was pregnant with her daughter, she got the crazy idea to quit her job as a dental assistant and become a longarm quilter. Without really knowing what a longarm machine was, she spent a day at a longarm dealer’s shop and walked out after purchasing a Gammill machine. Natalia’s passion for quilting and being creative has grown each day since. Shortly after her purchase, Natalia began blogging at piecenquilt.blogspot.com, and blogging became her connection with other quilters and fellow work-at-home moms. Whether it’s working on an intense show quilt or a simple baby quilt, Natalia has become a real quilting addict. She has won numerous awards for her work and has been featured on Moda Bake Shop, in Quiltmaker Magazine and American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine, and in books such as Fresh Fabric Treats, Modern Blocks and Sweet Celebrations with the Moda Bake Shop Chefs, Modern Quilts From the Blogging Universe and her first book, Beginner's Guide to Free-Motion Quilting. Class 1: Orange Slices - Beginner Level ~Friday from 1:30pm - 5:30pm~ In this class you will learn hands on Natalia's simple starch applique technique. Students will prepare and begin appliqueing the blocks for the "Orange Slices" quilt. ![]() ![]() Class 2: Beginner’s Guide to Free Motion Quilting - Beginner Level with knowledge of personal sewing machine doing FMQ (darning foot, lowering feed dogs, etc.) ~Saturday from 8am - noon~ In this class, you will learn all the basics of free-motion quilting, including choosing the correct thread, batting, and fabric to the basics of stitching on your quilt top. Then, you'll have a chance to try your skills with more than 50 illustrated tutorials for stitching allover quilting, quilting borders and sashing, and adding background fillers as well as quilting on individual blocks and appliqué. ![]() Teacher: Monique Dillard of Rockford IL Monique Dillard of Rockford IL (USA), was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada). Her love of quilting was nurtured by relatives in Canada who taught her the art of handwork and sewing. She parlayed her degree in mathematics into a genuine understanding of the need for an accurate 1/4” seam, squared blocks and precise cutting. She was a regular teacher at her local quilt shop for 15 years until her budding quilt design business - Open Gate – steered her career toward a national audience. These days, you can find Monique teaching across the United States at quilt guilds and weekend retreats. Monique’s classes always fill up fast with fans from previous classes and students eager to learn from this talented designer. Monique has 76 (and counting) Open Gate patterns and 3 rulers (Fit to be Square©, Fit to be Geese©, and Mini Fit to be Geese©). She has also partnered with Sue Glorch of Bundles and Bolts Quilt Co. to co-author 3 block-of-the-month (BOM) books. She finds inspiration for her traditional designs everywhere and is inspired by fabrics, textiles and tapestries. Several trips to Europe have resulted in not only new beautiful quilt pattern designs, but also her fabric line, Olde World Style with Maywood Studio. Olde World Style debuted in May, 2010 at the International Quilt Market in Minneapolis, MN. Class 1: Victoria Rose – Intermediate Level Quilt Size: 51”x74” ~Saturday from 1:30pm - 5:30pm~ Gather that favorite print along with a light and dark to make this striking 3 fabric quilt. During class, you will learn to use Monique's Fit to be Geese ruler to make accurate flying geese. Quilt features 9 patch block and star in star blocks, on point with your main print as setting triangles. ![]() Class 2: Marquis – Advanced Beginner Level Quilt Size: 68”x83” ~Friday from 1:30pm - 5:30pm~ From Monique's latest book, Diamond Traditions, Marqui is a lovely, striking quilt. This fat quarter quilt combines quarter square triangles with courthouse steops. Cleve shortcuts and streamlined techniques make piecing this quilt fun and easy! Monique will show you how to use the optional Fit to be Quarter ruler during class. If you want to make this quilt larger, yardage amounts are available in the book. ![]() Teacher: Shelly Pagliai of Prairie Moon Ranch in Missouri Shelly credits her maternal grandmother, Mildred, for getting her started down the road of quilting obsession, by enrolling her in 4-H sewing classes at the age of 8. When Shelly’s Great-Aunt Charlotte presented her with a garbage bag of scraps a few years later, she found her passion there among the fabric pieces. While the fabric scraps of inspiration have yet to be made into a finished quilt, her aunt’s gift in 1972 launched a full-fledged quilting career. By 1985, she had found her quilting niche in the needle-turn method of hand applique, but that didn’t stop her from trying other techniques. In fact, by 1996 she was teaching classes ranging from hand piecing and applique to quilt design. Those classes would carry over to her shop, Prairie Moon Quilts, where she began to sell her own patterns and kits in 1999. With the launch of her web site and blog in 2008, Shelly has explored even more opportunities for spreading the quilting word. In 2009, she purchased a longarm quilting machine, and has been doing professional machine quilting for customers and other designers ever since. Her work can be seen in several popular magazines, in shows and other venues, as well as online. When she’s not teaching class, selling her designs, operating the longarm, running her charity “Necktie Social”, or designing her own award-winning, nationally exhibited quilts, Shelly can be found spending time with her favorite cowboy and all their many animals on their Missouri ranch. Class 1: Greek Cross Quilt - Beginner Level ~Saturday from 8am - noon~ You will be taught 3 to 4 different methods for making half-squrare triangles. The pattern includes throw, twin, queen and king size option. ![]() Class 2: What the Hex? - Intermediate Level ~Saturday from 1:30pm - 5:30pm~ Quilt Size: 60”x80” You will learn to use the HOT NEW PRE-CUT called Honeycombs using set-in seams. ![]() Sew Sweet Quilt Shop
